i really want to get an analog tachometer on my X18
im not sure what will and wont work, will the link below work?
it says single fire, does that mean single cylinder?

will i need to buy a specific tachometer made for single cylinders?
this would be a really cool and cheap mod if it works

i was reading about how to install analog tachometers and all you have to do is wire it to the ignition coil

thats just an adapter, not the tach..

here is a digital one..

as far as analog, the only one I know of is made by Autometer and they say it only works on a Brisggs & Stratton engine, not sure why, you can call or email Autometer and ask them..

You can look for motorcycle tachs on ebay from a factory single cylinder bike, that may work...

My x12 came with a tach, not sure how accurate they are or if they actually go off of the ignition pulse or if it's one of the cheap set ups that are accuated from the voltage from the charging system, more voltage, higher reading?? I'm gonna take it apart and trace the wires down and see how it's hooked up..

That part allows you to use a tach from lets say a V-twin on your bike which gives you a hell of a lot more options. Now you can use ANY tach that will work on a Harley. In theory at least. There are probably 1-200 different style tachs for Harley's and other twins and that numer might be on the low side dunno There are also digital tachs that look just like analog. The have the sweeping arm and all except it's all LCD. The one thing is it doesn't have is that analog needle bounce :phat: which is cool in a cup cool_smilie

I don't belive that adapter will work, it requires 2 coils or a single coil with dual wires...It keeps the old Harley ignition set up from firing both wires at the same time, I may be wrong but thats the way I read it..

Yeah that should work but the one that Autometer makes for a single cyl for the jr dragsters say they only work on briggs engines.. The only draw back is it only reads up to 9k

awesome, thanks Randi and NP for the info
I will definetly consider getting an analog tach for my X18
I think it would be a great mod, look good and help with shifting

Randi, let me know if that X12 tach goes off the ignition coil and if its accurate or not

I might just invest in that,

thanks again guys

I have always liked the x12 style tach and speedo. If 125cc can succesfully mod them to be accurate, i would most likely sell my vapor and pick up an x12 gauge set.thumbsup2

I went back and read it again and you are completely right banghead again hahahaha! I was turning the thing completely backwards. To bad there isn't something like that out there or at least one that has been found. I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to fab-up but it way over my head.

I don't think your gonna be looking down that much.If you do i hope your not gonna be going around turns. The best thing about the tachs. Is you can tune your motor a little bit easier or better.Because you'll have something more to go on besides guesstimating.

No offense Cam, but i myself, prefer the x12 gauges. I guess if they were black instead of chrome that would change my mind

Hey ashar, if your going to spend $99 on just that harley style tach that might not even work, just get a Vapor Trail Tech. Its only $89 + shipping from dunersatv.com (or at least thats what i paid for it from them)

Yeah;-its the stock setup............The mph gauge is more accurate than the X-15/18/19 and the tach is dead on..................Peace

It will work but you might end up running out of tach real quick.
