I started working on this setup WOW 6 or 7 months back.
The full size bike and some mountain bike forks.Fork carttridges.I was trying to make an oil bathed cartridge......By using a car hood/trunk/hatch strut.I ran this setup up for a little while. The problem i had was i ran it with gear oil which made the forks real stiff and slow reacting. So i took them out and never got back to them.
Now that i'm gonna definitly be building a second bike i'm gonna pick back up on this project and find the right weight oil that i can used with this system.
I gotta runout back in a few with more details

Yep those are the one from the crown vict. The drop in way better than the chevy blazer ones.

Do you just drop those in? How much did you cut the spring on those? Do also run oil like your suppose to. Are they compressed in the fork tube.

I'm a little lost on what your doing dunno.... You said you ran gear oil in them so did you drain the gas from the cartrage and fill it with oil or just drop that unit in the fork tube and fill the fork with oil?? If the oil was in the fork I'm lost as how it would do anything with a sealed cartrage unless there was a seal around the cartrage that rides in the lower leg.... Looks like a cool idea, I'm just not grasping the set up with those pics..
Please do explain LOL...

Are they compressed in the fork tube.I tried this first.I put one strut in and left one spring. The forks still functioned but it wasn't the greatest,it was just a bench test. But the crown vics struts drop in the forks without any problems.I had to cut the springs in half.

Please do explain LOL...Sorry i got cut up and by the time i got home it was bedtime for me.
I used a small drill bit and drilled the strut SLOOOWWWWWWLY till the gas started seeping out. then i drilled one at the top. Then put some oil(i used gear oil and i think that was part of my problem) in the forks. Then i placed the strut in upside down in the fork tubes. The oil is suppose to enter through the bottom whole and fill the strut. Then get squeezed out through the top hole.. I copied what i saw for an oil bathed fork cartridge from a site for full size bikes. What i didn't think about at the time and i just thought of.I should have made the top hole WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY smaller so that way i could use a lighter weight fork oil.crazy_smilieI didn't spend a whole lot of time on this.So i can't honestly say it works fully or it don't.I will be working this over the weakend.Since it's the easiest project that i have on my plate.
I will post up more details on my progress.
