(simple awnser)

as they are when you buy them: No they are not street legal.

Can they be made street legal: Yes. With some work, time, and money

Is it a good idea: Probably not. Most of the people who do make them legal, usually toss the biggest motors they can find, that way they dont get run over. and riding a bike on the street is dangerous enough, much more for a bike that no one expects to see.

what you need: (minimum) Title, insurance, a motorcycle license, approved tires, lights, blinkers, plate bracket, replace all the bulbs, upgrade brakes, fuel lines, filters, electrical, battery, etc... Ive heard people speding 500-1000 just to make their bikes leagal and road worthy.

I'll let some other people handle the details.

Welcome to the Nation btw.

yeah, i picked one up about a month ago, if you can find a titled one, then great! they are pretty solid, but if its mostly stock, dont expect it to go over 55mph. but if you have the skill, you can always toss in a bigger motor in the ysr, anywhere from 60cc's to 650cc's (one of the members here is building the 650cc beast) and a motor swap can easily put you on highway speeds (or faster if you wish) but its still dangerous riding on the street. thats why i race my ysr instead of just buying a regular sized bike and riding on the road.

and depending on the state, it may be easy/hard to get a title for a ysr that does not have one. i know for me i have to be paying insurance on it before i can file for a title. and mine came with no lights, so i would have to rig up a battery, blinkers, lites, horn, etc.

i would just check you craigslist, they were yamaha's best selling bike, so your bound to find one eventually, you may have to drive to pick it up though, i did a 5hr round trip in a pickup with no ac to get mine. paid 625 for it.

I figure it will be cheaper to race it than fix it up an make it street legal. all i need to race are new tires really, but i'm also getting a few things to help the motor.

i got a legal x18
its awesome, its just like a bigger bike but smaller
i have spent alot on it but who wouldnt? i did it to ride the mid on the road, of course i want the best/safest things
in short ill say its been a blast
but i have been almost ran over, people merging into my lane without looking, have had to stop fast a few times which was fine until i looked away for just a second too long and ended up crashing the bike and hurting myself
and i cant wait to get back out there on it, there is no car that can compare to a bike
