View Full Version : Fuel Filter?

I went to start my x19 and it took quite a while.
When I could get it to start and idle, it would only go for 15 seconds or so then die.
Then I tried giving it gas and riding a while, thinking it was just cold and needed to warm up but it just bogged down like it was getting no fuel.
Can anyone reccomend an aftermarket fuel filter for me to get and other than a fuel filter, could anythingelse be causing this?
FYI, it has ran great up till today when I started it. No problems at all.
Thanks.rock2

Go to your local auto parts store and tell them you need a small 1/4 inch in-line filter. It wont be more than $2-$5. Maybe there was trash in the fuel and it has stopped up the jet. Pull the bowl off the carb and remove the jet. Make sure it is free of debris. Use carb or brake cleaner to wash it out and remove any trash.

Thanks for the help. thumbsup2

Also, this is still the last of the original tank of gas.
Like you said, it may just be debris.

Yea prolly was just trash in the tank. Make sure to flush/wash out your tank with clean gas.

That's exactly what's wrong with "TN" she chokes out after awhile. Open the cap and she's running again. Venting the tank is friday's project.

on your first tank of gas its unlikely that there is trash in it
these stock carbs suk bad
ive ran a straight line for about a year now thumbsup2

Blitz I haven't even got into the motor yet to see much of anything. I've been trying to fix obvious things first. I have a second motor already so the one in there is just a "Let's get to know each other" thing. If you were talking to me about thrash in the first tank I dunno I wouldn't say no after I looked at the pipe they put on. In making the tank if they had a drill a hole or shave off a little plastic I doubt they cleaned out the tank and those little pieces of plastic would do it. But like I said who knows if I find out otherwise I'll be sure to scream about it bluelaugh

BINGO!
I took the gas cap off and it seems to be running fine.
Any quick fixes for this cuz I can't ride around with it off?

drill u a small hole in the top. Not perfect but it's a quick fix

take a knife and hollow the tiny hole in the top of your gas cap(not too big though!!)..I took the clicker end of a pen (hollow one) and stuck it down in that hole and jb welded it then got a clear piece of tubing and put it on the end of the clicker. Then I got some black touch up paint and painted the clicker and where I glued it ..you can also use super glue if you are in a hurry but don`t glue the clear tube..just the clicker into the cap! thumbsup2

Also make the 2 holes bigger on the under side of the cap as in the pic..one on each side of the bigger hole..use a knife again to bore them out a little too.Lol I need to clean up my holes as you can see but it does work.

Thanks swanni. Very helpfull info.
Does anyone sell a gas cap modified like you describe?
Is it good for racing as far as spill/leak proof?

I also drilled a hole in the front top of my frame to run the tube down in..keeps crap out of the tube and keeps the tube from flopping around everywhere.

I agree. It is a great mod and will do it but I was just wondering if there is a person making them because it seems needed for a lot of the stock midbikes.rock2

Don't do this!!! Don't drill a hole in the gas cap and be done. Gas will spill out and onto the tank. Gas soaking the nads is not pleasant. use Swan Man's idea at the very least. On race bikes some drill a hole in the center of the steering head bolt and push the tube through there. It long enough that most gas coming out will run back into the tank and it's if front of the cap so it's easy and close. I'm looking aftermarket for a cap but it might take a minute. I have a lot of caps to look through. First I try the junk in my bud shop. If I can find a old one we can buy a new one? Other than that I'm looking at dirt bike tank caps to see if they'll work?

How about something like this.
It is for a pit bike.

I have done it lots of times it works...you run the vent hose away and infront of the tank..tons of guys have done it kindda like mine aswell with no problems...I got the idea from my xr 250

Here is a racing vent tube that fits most caps already and they are being sold with the vent hose.

those work aswell..just cut the breather tube short and add that vent..good find racer!

sry bout the idea, I wasnt really suggesting just drill a hole in the cap and leave it. I was kinda bein sarcastic because no better ideas came to me. Swanna got the best idea that I've heard of so far.

my original gas cap that came with my X7 was a different thread size than the gas tank and wouldnt screw on to save my life. but what i found out is that the cap from a gallon of milk fit perfectly and the caps are different colors for different types of milk. so i used a red cap (my bike is red) from a gallon of whole milk. but i knew that i had to vent it because it fit nice and tight and if i just put a hole in it then gas would go everywhere. wanting to go the cheap route, and get riding quicker, i removed a little material from the gas tank threads on one side and then went to the local hardware store and bought a couple different rubber stopper plugs. the ones that are tapered. i took the plug that i liked the fit and then i shoved a 16 or 18 guage needle thru it in the middle from one side all the way thru to the other side of the stopper. then i drilled a very small hole in my milk cap right were the needle vent was. the rubber stopper is about 1-1.25 inches deep and the needle just barely sticks out both sides. i push the stopper in till its almost flush with the top of the gas tanks threads. then i simply screw on my milk cap and voila it fits tight and doesnt leak a bit. and to remove the cap u simply unscrew the milk cap and then pull out the plug. (removing a small amount of material from the gas tank threads on at least one side makes removal of the rubber stopper much easier) and since the vent hole is so narrow and long it can still breathe well and doesnt spurt out gas like some of the stock caps do. i know that is kind of a cheap and halfassed way to fix a leaky cap, but it is a nice and tight fit and doesnt leak at all and still has a vent. but by using a rubber stopper u must watch your fuel filter carefully to make sure that rubber particles dont fall into the tank and clog your filter. ive been using a red inline Briggs and Stratton fuel filter for about a year now with this gas tank cap/stopper setup with no problems. ( i had to use the briggs and stratton filter because it was the shortest i could find, once i swapped out the 50cc for my 140cc engine space was rather limited between the bottom of the gas tank and the carbs fuel line inlet. especially since my new 140cc engines intake places the carb at a slight angle whereas the stock 50cc intake faces the carb straight back) so the fuel line ran at a slightly different angle now and the billet filters and the cheap plastic bowl filters were both to tall and made the gas line kink quite a bit to get them to fit. but the shorter inline b&s filter fit just right with an almost perfect fit for the new gas line, with no kinks. and it was only about $6. sorry i kinda strayed off topic. the cap and stopper, or only the stopper if your cap threads on correctly but still leaks around the threads, is an easy way to fix a leaky gas cap. i really noticed how much the stock caps leak especially when i ride wheelies on my brothers bike. (he still has the stock X7 cap but his does thread on decently well, but i still wouldnt call it leak proof) i am switching caps and possibly even tanks this winter so i will be using a hose vent like those above. the milk cap and stopper was only supposed to be temporary but it worked so well that its been almost a year now ive been using it.
